Lenin on despair

Is it any wonder that the crowd, tired out, and made wretched by hunger and the prolongation of the war, clutches at the Black Hundred poison? Can one imagine a capitalist society on the eve of collapse in which the oppressed masses are not desperate? Is there any doubt that the despair of the masses, a large part of whom are still ignorant, will express itself in the increased consumption of all sorts of poison?
