Spain Explained...!!!
No one will understand the recent history of Spain and, with it, the Catalan and Basque problems, without understanding the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath. The Spanish Republic lost the war not because of Franco’s military power, which was considerable and counted with the, more or less disguised, support of Britain, France, Portugal, Germany, Italy, etc… The war was lost because of the internal divisions of the Republic. The nationalists and leftist parties (Anarchists, POUM, etc, etc...), were crucial in this debacle. The disorganisation created by the nationalist secessionist armies and societies, destroyed a war effort that fell, inexorably, under the leadership of the Communist Party, the Comintern and the USSR. Even at the end, the war could have been prolonged, joined with the struggles of the WWII and won, but the anarchists (mainly ‘federalist' Catalans) and others attacked the communists and surrendered to Franco. After that, only the CP was left as the real opposition to Franco’s long regime. Franco respected local feudal laws in the Basque country as a grateful token (it is not true, as an extended myth has it, that Franco banned the Basque and Catalan languages, as nobody can ban a language out of existence just like that. He only reinstated Spanish as the official language, as was the custom in the country for many centuries, as English is the official language in Britain for instance, before the nationalists tried to revive their ‘dead’ languages, Gaelic, Welsh, to create a clientele and ethnically divide the workers). After Franco, the regime was so afraid of the CP, especially after the 1974 Carnation Revolution in Portugal, that they negociated a 'democracy' in which, with the usual electoral tricks (including the overrepresentation of the racist secessionists in Parliament), the nationalists were given the task of dividing the working class and were endowed with extensive powers and money to create their new nationalist ‘citizens’ through linguistic discrimination, special education-indoctrination, racist bureaucracy, independent police forces and even violence (ETA, Terra Lliure). This is the system that is imploding today in Spain, triggered by neverending corruption scandals and the weakness of a central government and a political oligarchy drowning in treason, graft and corruption and inextricably linked to the secessionist cause.
