It is unlikely that the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan was the result of an 'intelligence' trap set up by the reactionary Polish clique in the USA. To believe that is a naïve interpretation of the situation and an meek and uncritical acceptance of the 'media and propaganda' versions of the elites and their 'Vaticanist' lackeys.

The question of how and why the USSR collapsed, like the causes of the Civil War in Syria or Libya, is a very problematic, difficult and thorny question that, normally, cannot be explained with a single event in the history of warfare or rumours about spy agencies. Indeed, many countries, including the USSR, the USA and other powers, have suffered devastating defeats in the past, but their systems, though badly shaken, did not collapse like the USSR did. Vietnam and its people, for instance, were mercilessly bombed, purged with systematic programs of extermination and battered in all manner of ways and, yet, it came out on top.

It is obvious, as well as natural, that the USA and many other 'secret' agencies were involved in the war against the USSR in Afghanistan as they are involved in the 'Colour Revolutions' of today. Another matter is the political, economic and social issues that led many people to coincide or support or seek help from other countries and their agencies. The work of spies has to fall on fertile ground but, even then, might not make a significant difference.

The reasons for Soviet intervention in Afghanistan are not clear. The Soviet leadership (many rank and file were not convinced), might have been looking for a decisive propaganda victory after the American defeat in Vietnam. A kind of 'icing on the cake', that could convey to the world the inevitable victory and superiority of the Soviet forces and system and a 'resistance is futile' message. Perhaps they were seeking a new boost to the Military-Industrial Complex of the USSR after Vietnam.

We know that the strategy (like that of American and NATO in more recent times), was, essentially, flawed, as Pakistan could not be attacked in a meaningful way and, therefore, the guerrilla had a safe and inexhaustible area to arm and recruit. That they went in regardless, especially after Vietnam, shows that the Soviets had very compelling reasons to act, even if they could have protected their own border with relative ease.

The near coincidence of the collapse of the USSR with its withdrawal from Afghanistan, does not mean that Brzezinski's strategy was correct or successful. There were many other things going on in the USSR at that time. In this sense, the quick succession of inadequate and old leadership at the top, might have signalled the poor state of the USSR. The acceptance of Mr Brzezinski version of events, could be attributed to a massive American propaganda campaign, bent on erasing the Vietnam syndrome and the memory of defeat, to prepare the ground for future interventions for the elites.

Media and propaganda campaigns are, of course, very important. Something recognised, a long time ago, by the Working Class Socialist Movement. That is why Working Class parties and organisations have been structured around a working class press and propaganda efforts. Press and efforts that today, sadly, are extremely deficient, poor, weak, infiltrated, manipulated or simply inexistent.

The versions of the elites are just that, 'versions', that is, interested, duplicitous and, most likely, fake interpretations of reality. Like their science, literature or art, the versions of the exploiters are, by their very nature, highly suspicious and, even when they appear logical and true, should be handled with extreme care and apprehension.

Remember, and paraphrasing Kennedy, 'it is not so much what the exploiters can do to destroy you, but what you can do to destroy the exploiters'...!!!
