Luxemburg on women of the exploiting classes

Economically and socially, the women of the exploiting classes are not an independent segment of the population. Their only social function is to be tools of the natural propagation of the ruling classes. By contrast, the women of the proletariat are economically independent. They are productive for society like the men. By this I do not mean their bringing up children or their housework which helps men support their families on scanty wages. This kind of work is not productive in the sense of the present capitalist economy no matter how enormous an achievement the sacrifices and energy spent, the thousand little efforts add up to. This is but the private affair of the worker, his happiness and blessing, and for this reason nonexistent for our present society. As long as capitalism and the wage system rule, only that kind of work is considered productive which produces surplus value, which creates capitalist profit. From this point of view, the music-hall dancer whose legs sweep profit into her employer’s pocket is a productive worker, whereas all the toil of the proletarian women and mothers in the four walls of their homes is considered unproductive. This sounds brutal and insane, but corresponds exactly to the brutality and insanity of our present capitalist economy. And seeing this brutal reality clearly and sharply is the proletarian woman’s first task.

Kollontai sobre las feministas

En el día de la mujer las mujeres organizadas se manifiestan contra su falta de derechos. Pero algunos dicen ¿Por qué está separación de las luchas de las mujeres? ¿Por qué hay un día de la Mujer, panfletos especiales para trabajadoras, conferencias y mítines? ¿No es, en fin, una concesión a las feministas y sufraguistas burguesas? Sólo aquellos que no comprendan la diferencia radical entre el movimiento de mujeres socialistas y las sufraguistas burguesas pueden pensar de esa manera. 

¿Cuál es el objetivo de las feministas burguesas? Conseguir las mismas ventajas, el mismo poder, los mismos derechos en la sociedad capitalista que poseen ahora sus maridos, padres y hermanos. ¿Cuál es el objetivo de las obreras socialistas? Abolir todo tipo de privilegios que deriven del nacimiento o de la riqueza. A la mujer obrera le es indiferente si su patrón es hombre o mujer. 

Las feministas burguesas demandan la igualdad de derechos siempre y en cualquier lugar. Las mujeres trabajadoras responden: demandamos derechos para todos los ciudadanos, hombres y mujeres, pero nosotras no sólo somos mujeres y trabajadoras, también somos madres. Y como madres, como mujeres que tendremos hijos en el futuro, demandamos un cuidado especial del gobierno, protección especial del estado y de la sociedad. 

Las feministas burguesas están luchando para conseguir derechos políticos: también aquí nuestros caminos se separan: para las mujeres burguesas, los derechos políticos son simplemente un medio para conseguir sus objetivos más cómodamente y más seguramente en este mundo basado en la explotación de los trabajadores. Para las mujeres obreras, los derechos políticos son un paso en el camino empedrado y difícil que lleva al deseado reino del trabajo. 

Los caminos seguidos por las mujeres trabajadoras y las sufraguistas burguesas se han separado hace tiempo. Hay una gran diferencia entre sus objetivos. Hay también una gran contradicción entre los intereses de una mujer obrera y las damas propietarias, entre la sirvienta y su señora… Así pues, los trabajadores no deberían temer que haya un día separado y señalado como el Día de la Mujer, ni que haya conferencias especiales y panfletos o prensa especial para las mujeres.

Ardent greetings to working women and women toilers throughout the world who are uniting in one common family of labour around the socialist proletariat.

I wish them every success: 

1) in strengthening the international ties of the workers of all countries and achieving the victory of the proletarian revolution; 

2) in emancipating the backward sections of women toilers from intellectual and economic bondage to the bourgeoisie; 

3) in uniting the peasant women around the proletariat—the leader of the revolution and of socialist construction; 

4) in making the two sections of the oppressed masses, which are still unequal in status, a single army of fighters for the abolition of all inequality and of all oppression, for the victory of the proletariat, and for the building of a new, socialist society in our country.
